Events and Leisure

Variety is the spice of life, and variety is what we offer at The Place at Merritt Island. Our activities and social program is designed by a Recreation Specialist to blend the different interests of all our residents and develop camaraderie between our residents, families, and staff. Monthly resident council meetings are held to ensure residents’ satisfaction and discuss activities of interest. We also offer transportation services, at no additional cost, to medical appointments, banks, retail outlets, and grocery stores. Our calendar of events is given to every resident at the beginning of each month so everyone can plan to attend their favorite activities, invite their family members to join in, or to just experiment with the new programs offered every month. It’s like being on a vacation cruise every day of the week!

What is a Recreational Specialist?

Recreation Specialists provide treatment services and recreation activities to individuals with disabilities, illnesses or other such conditions. They use a variety of techniques to treat or maintain the residents’ physical, mental and emotional well-being. Treatments may include using arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music or community outings. These therapists help individuals reduce depression, stress and anxiety. They also help individuals recover basic motor functions and reasoning abilities, build confidence and socialize effectively to enable greater independence, as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or disability. In long term care and residential facilities, recreational therapists use leisure activities to improve and maintain general health and well-being. They may also treat clients and provide interventions to prevent further medical problems and secondary complications. Recreation therapists assess clients based on information from standardized assessments, observations, medical records, medical staff, family and the clients themselves. They then develop and carry out therapeutic interventions consistent with client needs and interests.
